INVENTION DESIGN / PROTOTYPINGElectrical Engineering Internship — Prototype Development (2 projects)
We need one or more E.E. students or recent grads (Master's level strongly preferred) to help create hardware prototypes of a couple of consumer audio devices. You could focus on the software, firmware or hardware side. These are both exciting projects and could be performed either as an internship or on a contract basis, with the possibility of royalties and/or patent co-authorship. These projects are extremely speculative, but there could be a strong upside if we find a licensee.
These projects would involve tasks such as designing audio algorithms, writing C code or programming a microcontroller, designing digital and/or analog circuits, breadboarding, soldering, and basic assembly skills. The software work may involve tasks like audio recording and playback, pitch tracking, pitch shifting, etc. You will need to be very self-motivated and self-directing. An ideal situation would be two or more interns who have worked together before and can help motivate each other.
TECHNICAL WRITINGManual for Spectral Machine
We are looking for a tech writer to write a manual for our forthcoming Spectral Machine plug-in, a frequency-domain multi-effects plug-in. The manual will be relatively short in length, because most of the product features are self-explanatory. We can provide manuals from previous products that can be used as a template.
Familiarity with VST and/or Audio Unit plug-ins is a big plus, possibly essential. Please be prepared to show examples of tech writing you have done. We would prefer that you use Adobe In Design or Microsoft Word, but that's not required.
PROGRAMMINGRTAS Plug-in Programmer
We're looking for a programmer to convert SFX Machine Pro to Digidesign's RTAS format. Experience with C++ and Visual Studio and/or XCode are needed. Experience with RTAS programming is strongly preferred. We will have little time for supervision, so the programmer needs to be resourceful and self-motivated.
SALES / MARKETINGMarketing Manager / Publicist — Contract or Internship
We are looking for a very part-time marketing person (a few hours per week at most). This work would be performed remotely from your current location. The ideal candidate should be familiar with existing audio products and preferably should know the audio plug-in market. Experience with getting consumer software onto retail shelves is not essential, but would be a plus. In addition to promoting our audio effects plug-ins, we need someone who can help us grow the market for ChatterBlocker (http://chatterblocker.com) and related products.
We would also be very interested in working with someone living in Japan, Germany or France who could help us get more publicity in those countries.
MUSIC
Composers
We are seeking original "ambient" or "new age" music submissions for a forthcoming audio software product.
The recordings should be suitable for uses such as sleep induction, meditation, relaxation or massage. We need instrumental master recordings without attention-catching melodies or sharp attacks (such as pianos or percussion instruments) . The tracks need to be instrumental, preferably from 4 to 15 minutes in length. We need a total of about 1 hour of material, but it could be from several different composers.
We're just looking for non-exclusive rights, so if you have existing music that already fits this description, we would be happy to consider it. We would prefer not to commission new work, because it can be frustrating to both parties if the result is not what we're looking for.
Update — The following positions are on hold at this time:
AUDIO RESEARCH INTERNSHIPPhysical Modeling / Frequency-Domain Processing
We want to do a Matlab prototype of a new guitar processing algorithm. We're looking for a grad student (EE or related discipline) with a good DSP background and strong Matlab skills. The areas of interest may include physical modeling (similar to what would be used for microphone or speaker modeling, etc.) and/or frequency domain processing (STFT). The goal would be a patent application and/or a technical paper. We have a couple of interns for this project, but we would like to find one more.
The results of last summer's Audio Research Internship can be seen on our Spectral Magnitude Decay page.
PROGRAMMINGGUI Programmer - VSTGUI / Audio Unit Plug-ins
We're looking for a programmer to work on the GUI aspects of one or more upcoming audio effects plug-ins. Experience with C++ and Visual Studio and/or XCode are needed. The candidate also needs experience with creating interfaces in VSTGUI and Audio Units.
AUDIO EFFECTS PLUG-IN DEVELOPMENTFor these projects, our preferred payment model would be milestone payments as an advance against royalty. (SFX Machine RT and SFX Machine Pro were developed using a similar model.)
Audio DSP Programmer — Audio Effects Plug-insWe're looking for developers for innovative new audio software plug-ins and other products. If you're an audio DSP programmer with new product ideas or prototypes, especially if you prefer to focus mostly on the actual DSP programming instead of the API code, marketing, etc., we would like to hear from you.
You provide the programming, based either on your own product ideas or one of ours. (Areas of special interest to us include voice processing, reverb, spatialization, etc., but you will be most effective if you work in an area you find interesting.) We would also be interested in finding someone who could strip down SFX Machine and make one or two smaller, specialized effects with a new GUI.
We supply web traffic, media contacts, and a cross-platform codebase in VST and Audio Unit plug-in formats for Mac OS X and Windows. We handle the sales, marketing and customer support and let you focus on what you enjoy most, the DSP programming.
If you have a small project or a niche market and your alternatives are 1) dealing with the expense, time and hassles of starting your own company, 2) trying to interest a larger publisher, or 3) releasing it as shareware, we would like to offer another alternative. Given the right product, we can help you obtain visibility while freeing you up to work on other projects.
QUALITY ASSURANCEBeta Testers
We need beta testers for a number of new products, including new pro audio plug-ins and some forthcoming consumer-level applications. If you're interested, send us a list of any products you've beta-tested previously, and let us know what kinds of computers you use. Your feedback will help us improved our new product line, and you'll get a free copy of the release version.
DESIGN YOUR OWN INTERNSHIPLet us know how you might be useful to us!
The Sound Guy, Inc., is a distributed company with developers in Massachusetts; Florida; Singapore; Romania; and Seaside, Stanford, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara, California. We are the creator and publisher of the award-winning SFX Machine audio effects plug-ins, and we have a number of new products in the works. Our software has been bundled with products by BIAS, Cakewalk, Digidesign, E-mu and others. We're a small company, but we've been around for a number of years, we have good contacts in the industry, and we endeavor to treat our partners fairly.
If any of these opportunities sound interesting, contact us.
